On July 23rd 2016 the UK voted 51% in favour of leaving the European Union. The decision caused the pound to plummet, sent shockwaves through the Eurozone and reduced the EU’s GDP from 16 trillion USD down to 13 trillion.
The vote was mostly driven by British fears of immigrant hordes swarming in from France. In 2015 refugees had attempted to storm the Chunnel in Calais while 2016 had brought a new wave of refugees from Syria.
The referendum was so close that it divided the country in half. Scotland, which was 62% in favour of staying in the Union was suddenly regretting its earlier decision to stay in the UK. The Scottish independence movement breathed fresh air while the rest of the country was crippled by division. The Eurosceptics urged David Cameron to stay on as PM to provide some sense of continuity despite the PM’s pro-Europe stance.
